The last musketeer series5/21/2023 ![]() Although the characters' speech is often too contemporary, their accessible language and vocabulary make this novel a good choice for older reluctant readers. Greg is a well-defined hero: each challenge he faces helps him recognize his own abilities and find acceptance among the friends whom he admires. ![]() Full of jovial humor, narrow escapes, sorcery, and intrigue, the novel will likely generate interest in the classic. Gibbs deftly packs an abundance of historical detail into a lively narrative that captures the swashbuckling spirit of Dumas's original. His plan to rescue his mom and dad requires the help of three new friends (yes, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis), who dub Greg "D'Artagnan." The four must defeat the evil Richelieu, who has a mysterious connection to the modern-day Louvre manager. The past proves dangerous as Greg's parents are quickly arrested and he becomes a fugitive. ![]() ![]() When his mother refuses to part with a cherished stone pendant, the manager grabs it and uses it to transport himself and Greg's unwilling family back to 1615 through a painting. Fourteen-year-old Greg is in present-day Paris with his parents to sell family heirlooms to the Louvre. ![]() Gr 5-8-Gibbs reimagines Alexandre Dumas's Three Musketeers with a liberal dose of fantasy. ![]()

The lost world by arthur conan doyle5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() They fight for their lives with pterodactyls, see iguanodons at play and watch the tragedies of life among the gigantic dinosaurs. When Conan Doyle sat down to write “The Lost World” did he say to himself he would prove that Rider Haggard had not exhausted the possibilities of weird and amazing fiction? Or did he stick his tongue in his cheek and set out to write a caricature of novels of adventure? Or did he just simply take all the strings off that scientific imagination of his and let it riot unrestrained with his central idea? Whatever his purpose, he has produced a highly interesting tale of outlandish adventure of a sort to stir the pulses and arouse the wonder of even the “jaded” novel reader.įor he goes back of the hintermost beyond of man’s knowledge, and has his little company of 20th-century scientists and adventurers test their courage and their skill against the huge and loathsome beasts of the Jurassic period. ![]() THE LOST WORLD by Arthur Conan Doyle | Review first published Oct. ![]()

![]() ![]() He picked out one of the books, opening up a black gap on the shelf, and mimed reading. He had got himself hemmed in by other people’s backs and jammed in a corner between a bookcase and a table of food, on either of which was there room for him to set down his glass, which had been empty for half an hour. Being an introvert myself, Brophy’s description of Marcus’s awkwardness at a party made me cringe: Since he has no need of a real occupation or a source of income, he spends his time reading and studying art. He has his own flat in London, for instance, but most nights he goes home for dinner and sleeps at his parent’s home. He is the only boy of a wealthy Jewish family living in London and, as a result of his upbringing, he leads a rather pampered life. At the beginning of the story Marcus is a timid, skinny, introvert who lingers at the edge of the parties that he forces himself to attend. ![]() I viewed the book as a metamorphosis, much like those described in Ovid’s epic poem, in both a physical and emotional sense. This was my first experience with a Brophy text and I was pleasantly surprised by her writing even with a rather short novella. ![]()
