The travels of jaimie mcpheeters book5/22/2023 ![]() There are several "coincidences" (like running into the same characters at various points along the trail) that help move the story along. Jaimie not only falls overboard and is thought to be dead, but he's also captured by Indians and held as ransom by a band of outlaws. I enjoyed this book tremendously, despite the fact that some of Jaimie's tales are somewhat unbelievable at times (possibly because they were slightly exaggerated in his re-telling of them!). Some of those journal entries are scattered throughout the book also. McPheeters also kept a journal that more accurately reflected the trials and hardships that the wagon train encountered. ![]() ![]() These letters have more superfluous wording and often portray a much more optimistic tale than the actual reality of the difficult trip because he does not want to cause his wife (Jaimie's mother) undue worry. His story is interspersed with letters from his father to his mother. The story is straightforward and often shows Jaimie's innocence as well as his growth over time. They are headed to California to find their fortune in the Gold Rush. ![]() ![]() The story is told from 13-year-old Jaimie's viewpoint as he journeys west from Kentucky with his father in the mid-1800s. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this 1959 Pulitzer Prize winner. ![]()

A soul to keep duskwalker5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() He tilted his head at her, which she was beginning to understand conveyed curiosity or thought. “I wish you had something different for me to wear.” He was just standing there idly with his arms limp by his sides. “I feel ridiculous wearing a wedding dress.” She sighed as she walked down the hallway and greeted him where he was waiting for her in the living room. Perhaps not truly comfortable, but safe nonetheless. Not just from the world outside, but him as well. He wasn’t intending to hurt her, and the amulet was just further proof of that.įor the first time, she actually felt safe in his presence. I will try to make sure it doesn’t end if I can. It finally registered that some of those marks on the walls belonged to those who hadn’t been killed by him. She’d remembered he’d said those words to her as he was kneeling in front of her while he was fixing it to her head. His words had been like a blanket of safety and ease, and it was then that she knew he’d meant if she wanted to die at the hands of Demons. Once he explained what it did, an overwhelming amount of relief washed over her. ![]() ![]() ![]() He’d asked her if she wanted to die, and at first, she’d thought it was a threat. She needed to remind herself that she was in a nightmare and that this cute cottage was nothing but deception and lies. She didn’t get that far, and she didn’t think she actually would have once she got outside and saw the forest, but she’d wanted to know, needed to fully see the trees pressing her in like bars of a cage. ![]()

Lower ed tressie mcmillan cottom5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() However, writes Cottom, another factor is that most of these students, ill-educated to begin with, simply have no preparation in navigating bureaucracies and no way of gauging the difference between one school and the next, down to knowing what the cost might be. What drives this preyed-upon class, whose members, the author rightly adds, are not necessarily academically inferior? In part, perhaps, the promise of a degree more easily attained than at a regular academic institution. ![]() The unknown number of for-profit students-variously said to be between 1.2 million and about twice that many enrollees-pays about 20 percent more than at a “flagship public university” for an undergraduate degree but about four times more than an associate’s degree at a community college. In this slender book, she lays out a case against a system that engenders predation and that profits, in the end, from social and economic injustice. An informal sociological study of diploma mills and their often ripped-off discontents.īefore becoming a sociology professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, sometime Slate columnist Cottom worked at a for-profit college whose machinations she came, once understanding them, to despise. ![]()
